Verification

See the answer. Check the source.

AI is only as trustworthy as the source behind it. Unlike apps or MCPs, with Tiller you can verify answers directly in your spreadsheet; no export required.

Performance

Engineered for both humans and AI.

Tiller spreadsheets have transformed hundreds of millions of customer transactions into a structured source of financial truth. AI efficiently reads that structure to help you understand your money and navigate your financial life.

A Tiller Transactions sheet with standard headers, an editable Category column, Transaction Id and Account Id columns, and a Create New Rules panel assigning Netflix to Streaming.
One consistent structure for every account.

Standard headers give AI predictable fields to filter, group, and compare your financial data across institutions.

Saved edits carry your financial context forward.

Splits, notes, category changes, and added columns inform later questions and reports

Unique IDs enable reliable matching.

Stable Transaction, Account, and Balance IDs give AI references for account-level queries, and database-style joins.

Your categories tell AI what transactions mean to you.

Your category rules tell AI when a transaction is personal, reimbursable, or something else.

Tiller and AI FAQ

Yes. AI is optional. You can categorize transactions, review spending, manage budgets, track balances and net worth, and build reports without connecting an AI tool. AI Suggest, Tiller MCP for Claude, and third-party AI tools are each your choice.

Tiller is a spreadsheet-based personal finance service that launched in 2016. Tiller adds your spending, income, and balances to Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel, with prebuilt money templates and human support. The spreadsheet remains yours, even if you stop using Tiller, so you choose which AI tools to use with it.

You can use Tiller with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, each in the spreadsheet app it supports. You can also upload a copy of your spreadsheet to any AI chat that accepts files. Plans, permissions, and capabilities depend on the spreadsheet app, the AI provider, and how you connect. See: 20 ways to use AI with your Tiller spreadsheet

Yes. Tiller has an MCP server. Tiller MCP for Claude is live in Claude’s connector directory. With Tiller MCP for Claude, Claude reads your transactions and categories in Google Sheets and answers your questions. Claude can also update transaction categories and notes after you allow the action. Claude works inside Microsoft Excel too, through Anthropic’s Excel add-in.

Yes. ChatGPT works with spreadsheets in Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel on plans from Free to Enterprise, with limited usage on Free and Go. ChatGPT can analyze your Tiller spreadsheet, explain its formulas, build trackers and budgets, and update the spreadsheet from a plain-language request. Review the changed cells before you rely on them.

Yes. Gemini works directly in Google Sheets on eligible Google plans.

Yes. Copilot works inside Microsoft Excel on eligible Microsoft 365 plans. Copilot can analyze data, generate formulas, compare trends, and build or edit spreadsheet content.

AI Suggest is an optional AutoCat feature for Google Sheets with Direct Fills. Tiller uses Gemini for AI Suggest. After AutoCat Rules and Description Match run, AI Suggest proposes categories for transactions that remain uncategorized. Review the suggested categories before you rely on them.

Your Tiller subscription covers Tiller MCP for Claude. Other AI tools follow their provider’s plans. Each setup guide lists the current requirements.

No. You can use AI with the financial information in your Tiller spreadsheet, without connecting the AI to your financial accounts. Tiller connects to the financial accounts you authorize and adds available transactions and balances to your spreadsheet. You then choose what information to share with AI.

Only with your consent. Tiller doesn’t send your transactions to an AI tool unless you turn on AI Suggest or connect Tiller MCP for Claude. Any other AI tool receives only the spreadsheet data you share. Tiller never trains AI on your data.

No. Share the accounts, dates, columns, rows, or separate file the question requires. Connection methods have different permissions, so review the access you grant before you connect a tool.

Some AI workflows can edit authorized spreadsheet content, while others only receive the data you choose to share. Tiller MCP for Claude updates transaction categories and notes, and only after you allow the action. For any other tool, review the permissions for that tool and connection method before you give edit access.

Yes. Your spreadsheet stores the transactions, categories, formulas, and other financial information behind the answer. Filter the same transactions, inspect what was included, and verify the calculation yourself.

Tiller checks your linked accounts every day and adds new transactions once they clear. Some transactions take 2 to 3 days to clear. Timing varies by bank connection. In Excel, click Fill Available Updates to add new transactions to your spreadsheet.

Your spreadsheet, transactions, categories, corrections, formulas, and reports don’t depend on one AI provider. You can use the same spreadsheet with another compatible tool, use several tools, or stop using AI.

Yes. Use sample data to test prompts, reports, and workflows without your financial data.
